Lanthanide based paramagnetic chemical exchange saturation transfer (PARACEST) compounds represent an emerging class of MRI contrast agents.The major advantage is that one can turn the image contrast ‘on’ and ‘off’ by the application of external radiofrequency pulse. Nanoparticle MRI contrast agents can potentially provide better sensitivity and also serve as a platform for combining contrast with targeting capabilities, yet despite these advantages, most published examples of PARACEST agents are molecular. Nanoparticle examples are typically particles modified with known molecular analogues. Here, a different approach develops particles with intrinsic PARACEST capabilities. Interaction of double-hydrophilic block copolymers containing a poly(acrylic acid) block with europium ions in water leads to the spontaneous formation of hybrid polymer/inorganic particles. Saturation transfer experiments with these assemblies show a significant decrease in intensity of the bulk water signal, suggesting its potential application as a PARACEST agent. The preparation and characterization of the hybrid systems will be presented along with the effects of particle environment on the PARACEST response. <br/>
