The decoration of noble metals onto two-dimensional (2D) materials has been used to gain sensitivity in for plasmonics-based sensing applications. Herein we report the synthesis and plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticle - Ti3C2Tx (MXene) heterostructrues. MXenes are a new type of 2D material, derived from ternary carbide bulk MAX phase, Ti3AlC2. MXene nanosheets are comprised of strong titanium-carbon nanosheets with -OH/-O/-F surface terminals. The rigid Ti-C bonds present in MXene nanosheets provide promise for increased free volume in the interlayer gallery of pillared MXene compared to the flexible metal-oxide bonds present in clays and layered titanates. The plasmonic properties were evaluated with crystal violet and Rhodamine 6G, using Raman spectroscopy. The as-prepared heterostructures were characterized using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. MXene decorated with gold nanoparticles have great potential for diverse sensing applications ranging from food safety control, environmental monitoring and assessment, forensic investigation, to medical diagnosis.
