Research on energy sources that are alternative to fossil fuels has gained increasing attention due to their depletion and effects on earth’s climate. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier is an excellent choice owing to high energy stored in its bond. It is possible to obtain hydrogen from readily available and abundant sources such as water via electrochemical methods similar to the photosynthesis in plants. However, since water splitting reaction is non-spontaneous and needs high amount of energy, catalysts with high stability and activity are required for the efficient formation of hydrogen from water. Due to their large surface areas, and thus large active sites, nanoparticles embody great potential to be used as heterogeneous catalysts. Among them, metal oxide nanoparticles are particularly attractive since they have been proven to be very effective catalysts for electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, Fe-Mn oxide nanowires (NWs) in bixbyite structure were synthesized and used as electrocatalyst for OER. Characterization of NWs were done by XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, TEM, BET and ICP-OES. Catalytic activities of NWs towards OER and stabilities of the prepared electrodes were investigated by electrochemical measurements, namely linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and controlled potential coulometry. The synthesis, characterization and electrochemical findings will be presented.
