Thermosetting resin applications in the wood-based composites industry are under pressure for continuous improvement. One example is the introduction of tack into oil/water emulsions- resin tack is an incredibly important property for the manufacture of particleboard. The overarching goal for this research is to determine if soybean hull pectins can introduce tack into aqueous dispersions of polymeric methylenediphenyl-diisocyanate resins (pMDI). Soybean hulls were selected simply because they are a high volume, low value agricultural byproduct. The initial stages of that effort are presented where we describe the isolation and characterization of soybean hull pectins. An HCl digestion was used to isolate the pectins. The methyl ester content was measured using infrared analysis; the galacturonic acid assay was conducted using 3-phenylphenol; and some preliminary rheology was conducted. This represents our first steps towards an exhaustive study of soybean hull pectins.<br/> <br/>
