This study explores the critical structure-activity relationship (SAR) of emerging pefluoroether acids (PFEAs) treated by hydrated electron (eaq–). The eaq– generated via UV irradiation can effectively cleave the strong carbon-fluorine (C–F) bond in PFEAs. Different PFEA structures were investigated in order to understand the dependence of rate and extent of degradation on a series of structural features of PFEA compounds. Theoretical calculations and mass spectrometry analyses of the reaction intermediates and products will be combined with experimental results for a comprehensive understanding of PFEA degradation mechanisms and pathways. The treatment performance on PFEAs will also be compared to traditional PFASs containing a single fluorocarbon chain in order to evaluate the effect of introducing ether linkages in the angle of environmental remediation.
