Polyoxometalate ions (POMs) are predominately-anionic metal-oxide clusters usually composed of Group IV or V transition metals and oxygen. With ever-expanding range of applications for POMs, it is essential to be able to relate the solid-state structure of POMs to their reactivity in solution. To do so, we have begun studies on the small Anderson-type POMs, which consist of a central octahedral atom surrounded by six transition metals bridged by oxygen atoms. Our previous study involved the IMo6O245- ion; now, we have made a single-site substitution by replacing the I(VII) with Te(VI) to form the TeMo6O246- ion. Herein, we present the crystal structure, aqueous solution reaction dynamics and oxygen-exchange kinetics of the TeMo6O246- ion and compare it to the isostructural IMo6O245- ion.
