The lanthanide elements have found wide spread use in everything from smart phones to bioanalytical systems due to their unique magnetic and luminescent characteristics.  In an effort to create new and interesting materials, we have recently been working to synthesize lanthanide periodate compounds.  However, as periodate is a relatively strong oxidizing agent, it can be difficult to maintain at elevated temperatures.  In fact, to date only one lanthanide periodate structure type is known from a room temperature reaction.  The facile reduction of periodate to iodate can be prevented through the use of a sacrificial oxidant.  Here we explore the synthetic conditions and report new crystal structures in a neodymium-periodate-iodate system.
