The thiosulfate anion (S2O32-) is a versatile, tetrahedral ligand that can exhibit bonding through both the “soft” sulfur and the “hard” oxygen atoms. Here the sulfur atom has a propensity to bond to soft metals and create interesting molecular and extended structure compounds. Our investigations here are concerned with creating complexes between thiosulfate and either heavy transition metals or heavy main group metals. A better understanding of the coordination chemistry of these metal cations with thiosulfate could lead to new heavy-metal extraction techniques or other industrial/medical applications. Herein, we discuss the syntheses and single-crystal structural characterizations of new heavy metal thiosulfate compounds synthesized at room temperature via either slow evaporation or slow diffusion.
