Semicrystalline polymers are pervasive in our daily life and their long-term reliability is often critical. As a result, uncertainties related to product lifetime for new systems can often slow adoption. It is widely believed that tie molecules influence the mechanical properties of semicrystalline polymers and that short chain branches increase tie molecule content and create anchor points. But it is apparent that we need to know the actual molecular mechanisms to properly model lifetime. To this end, I discuss successes achieved through our industry/government partnership towards quantifying ties molecules in polyolefins through a new label-free small angle neutron scattering (SANS) based technique.
