Communication between two metal centers placed in close vicinity (&lt; 5 Å) can engender new properties and useful reactivity that the isolated metal fragments cannot access alone. However, the nature of such multimetallic effects are often poorly understood, in part due to the limited availability of ligands that enable synthesis of isolable families of heterobimetallic complexes. Here, we will describe the preparation, characterization, and electrochemical properties of new heterobimetallic complexes of Co, Rh, and Ir complexes assembled with common glyoxime and pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) ligands. The synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical properties of the heterobimetallic complexes will be discussed. More recent results on use of the heterobimetallics to enhance catalytic hydrogenation of simple organic molecules will also be discussed.
