The synthesis of sialic acid containing glycoconjugates is currently one of the most challenging task in the field, due to concomitant side reactions as well as harsh overall reaction conditions. On the other hand, the biological importance of this class of natural compounds drives the continuous search of efficient synthetic methodologies. Recently, we reported the activating and alpha stereodirecting effect of a picoloyl group at C-4 in the presence of an excess of triflic acid. As a part of a research goal centered in investigating the effect of O-protecting groups in sialylations, herein we report the synthesis and testing of thiosialosides di-picoloylated at several O-positions.
