As energy supplies deplete, reducing energy consumption and generating renewable energy sources has become increasingly important. Magnetic refrigeration (MR), an alternate solid-state cooling method, has the capacity to exceed traditional gas compression refrigeration efficiencies without employing environmentally toxic refrigerants. MR is based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), where a temperature change is associated with changes in magnetic entropy. Reliable and efficient magnetocaloric materials (MCM) must exhibit a large adiabatic magnetic entropy change (dSM), a Curie temperature near room temperature (Tc), and low thermal hysteresis (dH); materials that exhibit all of these characteristics and are economically viable are few. Due to their diverse functionality, bulk transition metal pnictides (group are a promising class of materials to evaluate for applications in magnetic refrigeration. However, on the nanoscale these systems lack a holistic understanding of how individual contributors, such as metal precursor reactivity and their behavior in particular synthetic environments, affect the formation of desired products. In order to expand our toolbox for preparing complex transition metal phosphide nanoparticles, we seek to evaluate phosphidation rates as a function of temperature and time in binary metal phosphide systems (M2P; M=Fe, Co, Ni) using various zero-valent metal carbonyl and di/tri-valent acetylacetonate salt precursors.
