The economical production of a wide variety of petrochemicals in use today relies heavily on the availability of eficient catalysts. Catalysis allow transformations to be carried out under mild conditions with high selectivity and yield. As a result, it is imperative to develop new catalyst systems that offer increased activity with inexpensive materials under mild conditions. In the last few decades N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a powerful class of carbon-based ligands. Owing to their unique electronic and steric properties, they have been incorporated in a large variety of catalytically active metal complexes. Vital to the advancement of NHC-based catalysts has been the design and synthesis of new NHCs that display an array of electronic and steric properties. The synthesis and structural characterization of a new chelating anionic NHC system will be presented.
