The pursuit for medical applications of radioisotopes is an ongoing research inquiry, with targeted alpha-particle therapy (TAT) being at the cutting edge of this effort. Ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMP) shows promise as a ligand that can be complexed with certain radio nuclei for targeted cancer therapy, as has been done with samarium-153. However, problems with this approach include the fact that samarium-153 undergoes beta decay, resulting in less targeted effects, and that the <sup>153</sup>Sm(EDTMP) therapy currently being offered had not been characterized in solid-state. This project characterizes the <sup>153</sup>Sm(EDTMP) complex via a novel crystal structure and solid state UV-Visible-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the gadolinium and dysprosium EDTMP complexes were synthesized in order to prepare for work on an alpha-emitting californium complex.
