Value-added phosphorus chemicals have traditionally been prepared via white phosphorus, P<sub>4</sub>, itself obtained in the energy intensive and CO<sub>2</sub>-generating thermal process for upgrading of phosphate rock raw material. The latter process uses ca. 30% of the energy for upgrading of all phosphate rock processed, even though the lion’s share of phosphate is subjected to the wet process for manufacture of phosphoric acid and derived fertilizers. Therefore, we are seeking new methods for the incorporation of phosphorus atoms from phosphoric acid into value-added chemicals. To be discussed is the reaction of trimetaphosphate with trichlorosilane, a high production volume chemical used in the manufacture of high purity silicon, leading to the generation of the new bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. Reactions of this anion leading to phosphorus-element bond formation will be discussed. Also to be discussed is the reduction of phosphoric acid itself using trichlorosilane. As an alternative to a reductive process we will consider methods for forming phosphorus-carbon bonds from phosphate in a redox-neutral fashion.
