Nitrogen-donor ligands, particularly those with two conjugated imine fragments, are of special interest given their wide range of redox-activity and have recently become popular platforms for examining the unique behaviors of uranium. The reduction of these species can lead to a variety of interesting electronic and structural features, and their employment as equatorial ligands for uranyl has been useful for studying reactivity at the axial oxo moieties. Schiff base ligands with mixed-donor pockets offer additional opportunities to explore metal-ligand interactions. We have recently reported uranyl complexes of two such O-N-N-O frameworks (a salen and a phen-BIAN) with extended conjugation that suggest a significant degree communication exists between the metal and the ligand. Additional derivatives of these ligand systems and their complexes will be presented, with focus on how variations in binding pocket and degree of conjugation impact their properties.
