Nanostructures are represented by compounds whose dimensions fall into the 1-100 nanometer scale. The capability of such compounds to self-assemble has been of much importance and due to their implications in material technology and biotechnology a significant amount of attention has been given to these structures. These newly formed ordered structures can take on novel and desired functionality in the form of nanotubes, nanorods, and twisted ribbons. They are sought-after for their superior functionalities as they have the ability to act as therapeutics for antimicrobials, and drug delivery systems for the treatment of cancers, diabetes, and many other diseases. Due to their many applications scientists have made this area one of great focus, as the ability to mimic naturally occurring nanostructures can aid in the development of medicine, and bio-technology.<br/>In the realm of self-assembled nanostructures, much attention has been given to peptides. Peptides allow for chemical diversity, stability, and similarity to biological components like proteins. For the case of this study α-AA-peptides will be utilized to determine their ability to self-assemble into nanostructures.It is reported in this project that the utilization of the positive charge on the amine group, and pi electrons of the aromatic groups as well as hydrogen boding of the backbone of our compound has led to the formation of nanotubes, twisted ribbons, and spherical structures that are promise for the future of therapeutics, drug delivery and development of nanostructures as biological agents.
