Treatment of commercially available 6-substituted pyridine-2-carboxyaldehydes with Mes*P=PMe3 afforded a series of sterically and electronically diverse pyridine-phosphaalkene ligands (1). Exposure of 1 to RuCl2(PPh3)3 in benzene at RT resulted in the formation of two distinct type of species, pyridine-phosphaalkene-derived 2 and cyclometallated 3, both in good yields. Isolated complexes of Type 2 could be converted to 3 in solution with heat. The “new” phospholane-pyridine ligands present in 3 feature acidic, benzylic-type protons; attempts to deprotonate this site and produce highly reactive dearomatized Ru(II) complexes will be discussed.
