A series of poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers with varying hydrophilic and hydrophobic block lengths were synthesized via sequential nucleophilic substitution polycondesation followed by block copolycondensation. The copolymers were functionalized in the range of 0.5 to 3 by benzylic bromination. A series of long flexible quaternary ammonium based side chains were attached to the copolymer backbone through Menshutkin reaction. Both structures and degree of functionalization of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) were calculated using <sup>1</sup>H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. The water uptake, swelling ratio, and ionic conductivity of the ionomer membranes were examined. The effect of multiblock architecture, side chain structure and chain length on ionomer properties were studied. The side chain type mutltiblock AEM properties were also compared with benzyltrimethylammonium based AEMs with no side chain.<br/>
