Coastal and marine sediments in-situ ability to induce transformations of halogenated hydrocarbons (HCs) is an important aspect of understanding the global halogen cycling and their natural attenuated remediation.  Comparative solvent solid phase extraction  techniques (Soxhlet  and  microwave protocols) and at site gas solid phase trapping of  whole wet sediments were investigated by GC/MS to determine  the  volatile  and  semi-volatile  array of organics  present to  infer  the chemistry of the environment. Segmented sediment core acid and water extractable metals were determined by ICP and XRF to elucidate potential surface metal catalyzed reactions for HCs. A relationship of granular size, carbon content, and surface metals in each of the core depth profiles was determined.  Autoclaved and dried sediments’ HCs degradation potential were compared to determine potential in-situ abiotic or biotic pathways by HPLC-IC, GC/MS headspace and 13C  NMR.
