We are exploring tetranuclear Mn(I) clusters for use in hydrogen production from water. Specifically, photolysis of a strong-field ligand induces a significant O–H bond weakening event that may have consequences in H<sub>2</sub> production. We have also shown that using electronically tuned ligand scaffolds coordinated to Mn(II) ions provides an inroad to linear free energy relationships for studying O<sub>2</sub> reduction mechanisms that would otherwise not be possible.
