Alpha zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) has been thoroughly studied since it was first reported by Clearfield. ZrP has been shown to have a diverse reactivity due to the presence of acidic phosphate sites throughout the material that can undergo many types of reactions. Historically, most research has focused on the intercalation chemistry of ZrP and only recently has surface chemistry been investigated. Only a few studies have looked at the combination of these two methods but it is unclear how the interlayer chemistry and surface chemistry impact one another. The relationship between intercalation and surface modification was investigated by synthesizing a series of compounds that were both intercalated and surface modified. The synthesized materials were characterized using FTIR, powder x-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate changes in the material behavior. Current results show that the stability of the surface bond is dependent on the interlayer interaction.
