Rhenium is one of the rarest transition metals found on earth and is currently being investigated for its applications as an anticancer agent. While some of the most intriguing medical research done on rhenium is for its theranostic properties against a variety of cell lines (meaning that it combines both a targeted therapeutic aspect as well as a diagnostic aspect to the treatment), it is rarely studied in terms of its environmental impact. Therefore, the toxicity of rhenium against non-cancerous cell lines should be further investigated, and data from these studies should be compiled. The literature involving rhenium biochemistry and anticancer properties will be reviewed, and information about the toxicity and potency of rhenium compounds as well as future avenues of research will be identified.
