Recently, icosahedral borane and carborane moieties have been utilized in ligand structures to provide non-coordinating, charged substituents. This integration of cluster fragments into coordination chemistry creates an interesting pathway for the use of dodecaborates in catalysis and other applications. To this end, we have synthesized a variety of Schiff-base derivatives utilizing the amine-dodecaborate B12H11NH3– and a variety of salicylaldehydes and pyridinecarboxaldehyde in moderate to high yield. The products were characterized by 1H, 13C, and 11B NMR spectroscopy, and by ESI-MS. The coordination chemistry of these imine ligands will be discussed.
