Protective equipment is used to prevent injuries in soft tissue from blunt impacts that can occur at velocities up to 10 m/s with energies reaching 100 J, often under non-uniaxial loading. Standardized testing classifies the protective levels of equipment on the ability to limit acceleration, force, rotational velocity, or pressure transmitted to the wearer. There is a measurement and modeling gap between system performance and the material specific dynamic response that is not addressed with current dynamic metrologies. The first part of this presentation will introduce two new methods to characterize dynamic compression and dynamic compression/shear of materials under moderate impact conditions. In the second part of the presentation, a series of hybrid composites with an elastic architecture independent of the viscous response are investigated using both metrologies. We demonstrate the role of both elastic and viscous factors in tuning the dynamic response under compressive and compressive/shear loading conditions.
