Nitrogen-based ligand systems for complexation with Alkali and Alkaline-Earth metals are of interest for application as potential MOCVD precursors. More traditional oxygen-based ligand systems can be problematic when complexed with the highly electropositive Alkali and Alkaline-Earth metals as they tend to form undesired metal-oxide side-products with low volatility. For this reason, nitrogen-based ligands are attractive alternatives. Compared to metal-oxygen bonds, the metal-nitrogen bonds are more labile. Therefore, a multi-dentate pincer ligand is considered here as a new potential ligand system for Alkali and Alkaline-Earth metal complexes. Modified synthesis of the N,N,N- pincer ligand bis[2-(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)ethyl]amine had greatly increased yield over literature values. Most significantly, product formation and stability were monitored by direct solid-state and solution APCI mass spectrometry under inert conditions.<br/>
