The reaction of Fe2+ with KCN was first done at the beginning of the 18th century in the synthesis of Prussian Blue. Although iron cyanide chemistry has been continuously studied for more than 300 years, we are the first group to use synthetic chemistry’s first reaction to create a new series of Fe2+ and Fe3+ cyanide complexes with monodentate ligands. For example, the reaction of Fe2+ with four equiv of CN- in pyridine or DMSO gives cis-[Fe(II)(CN)4(py)2]2- and trans-[Fe(II)(CN)4(DMSO)2]2-. We have developed this coordination chemistry to characterize complexes such as trans-[Fe(II)(CN)4(N-MmeIid)(CO]2- (Fig 1). We have exploited the same phenomena which enabled Alfred Werner to synthesize octahedral Cr3+ and low spin Co3+ ammine complexes. Complexes with large Ligand Field Stabilization Energy, have slow ligand substitution reactions.
