Bismuth and bismuth-based compounds afford many attractive materials properties, being nontoxic, inexpensive, and reliably sourced with high photo- and thermal stability. Coupled with their promising luminescent and catalytic behavior, bismuth-based materials have already been used in areas such as solid state materials, pharmaceuticals, and photocatalysts. Additionally, the high tunability of bismuth-organic compounds offers advantages in tailoring structural and spectroscopic properties of the desired end product. In an effort to further develop our understanding of bismuth-based compounds, we have been exploring various luminescent bismuth- and lanthanide-doped bismuth-organic compounds built from a dual ligand system incorporating both thenoyltrifluoroacetone and an N-heterocyclic ligand. Here, we present the room temperature synthesis and solid state structural characterization of several of these compounds. The photophysical behavior of the luminescent compounds will also be discussed.
