Aromatic amine N-oxides are studied in coordination chemistry for their ability to form polynuclear complexes with interesting magnetic properties. 2-Methoxy-6-methylpyridine N-oxide (L1) is known industrially to be a fungicide as well as a key ingredient in hair regrowth treatments. L1 was synthesized by oxidation of 2-methoxy-6-methylpyridine as a potential precursor for the synthesis of a hexadentate Schiff base capable of forming dinuclear mixed metal complexes. Upon reacting L1 with different 3d metallic salts, obtained complexes contained either unchanged ligand, L1, or its demethylated form as evident from their crystal structures. The demethylation of L1 is dependent upon used metallic salt and other reaction conditions, such as solvent, temperature and reaction time. Oxidation of L1 yields a semiquinone-type compound that differs from the demethylated L1 despite both ligands producing a similar Cu(II) complex upon complexation.
