The photophysical characterization and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of a set of four group 14 metalloles will be described, and their behavior compared to a “reference” silole (1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole). The compounds, 1,1-diallyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole, 1,1-(1-hydroxypropyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsilole, and the germanium analogues of these two compounds, display substantial (AIE) when forced to aggregate in mixed solvent systems, in contrast to the behavior of more typical luminophores, which tend to self-quench when aggregated. In addition to basic characterization, the AIE behavior of the compounds, to include luminescence lifetimes and particle size distribution of the nanoaggregates, will be reported. The synthesis and thorough characterization of AIE-active compounds is of interest due to their potential for use in electrooptical devices and chemical sensors.
