Toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are known to be found in aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used widely in fire extinguishers to help abate flames.1 Extensive commercial and industrial PFAS-based applications have also contributed to their occurrence,2 while their high aqueous solubility and extreme resistance to degradation have made them ubiquitous in the environment. Continued regular use of such technologies has increased PFAS concentrations around these sites to several orders of magnitude higher than the US EPA health advisory level (HAL) for drinking water.3 To reduce these concentrations, one approach involves the capture of PFAS from aqueous media using porous materials. The use of highly porous, tunable metal organic framework (MOF) materials is appealing for liquid phase adsorption. In this work we demonstrate the excellent capture potential of low concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) using both Cr-MIL-101 and Fe-MIL-101. Experimental characterization of PFOS uptake reveals unique differences in adsorption properties between these two analogs providing key implications for future PFOS sorbent design.
