Rhodium alkylidenes are important intermediates in catalytic cyclopropanation of olefins, and are usually generated by the reaction of carbenoids with 'paddlewheel'-type dirhodium catalysts. Recently a new way to generate Rh=CR<sub>2</sub> bonds has been developed in our laboratory, based on cascade activation of dihaloalkanes in the presence of mild reducing agents. The substrate scope, reactivity, and implications for new carbene transfer reactions (e.g. cyclopropanation) will be discussed.
