A deeper understanding of the surface chemistry of gold and silver nanoparticles will lead to better control over applications in medical and consumer products. Noble metal nanoparticles are frequently capped with molecules including polymers, surfactants, and proteins. In this work, the localized surface plasmon resonance peak of gold and silver nanoparticles capped with Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) was found to be less stable under exposure to artificial sunlight and ultraviolet light than the peak associated with nanoparticles capped with citrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone. Attenuated Total Reflectance – Infrared Spectroscopy was used to investigate the secondary structure of protein molecules in solution and on the surface of the nanoparticles.<br/>
