In our research our focus is to design and synthesize simple 3d metal complexes for colorimetric sensing of toxic ions like cyanide and phosphates. The use 3d metal based molecules is favorable, due to the availability, low-cost and diverse coordination possibilities including rich colorimetric properties. We have used cobalt based complexes for colorimetric cyanide sensing[1] and some iron based complexes for colorimetric phosphate sensing. The sensitivity to the cyanide is determined in water with presence of micromolar level of cyanide ions, where for the sensing of micromolar level phosphates methanol solution is used. The spectroscopic changes due to the interaction of the coordination complexes and the toxic ions (cyanide/phosphates) are quantified by UV-vis and fluorescence data. Interestingly, we have chemically immobilize the cobalt complexes on the cellulose surface and stull be able to maintain the cyanide sensing property.[2] The hybrid surface based modification makes the systems more easy to use. In addition we are also investigating the various ligand electronics to understand and improve the cobalt complex based cyanide sensing.
