Discovered in the 15th century, Bismuth (Bi), a p-block metal, was often confused with lead due to its low melting point. Today bismuth compounds have several technical applications, such as thin films, via metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), requiring good quality precursors. Ideal precursors are volatile, show a low degree of aggregation, and cleanly sublime into the gas phase without decomposition. Initial work on the bulky perfluoro-tert-butanol (H(PFTB)) ligand, showed fascinating structural and thermal properties. Importantly, weak, non-covalent interactions constituted critically to the overall features and properties. We here describe the extension of this project by replacing a trifluoromethyl group in the ligand by a phenyl group to obtain the 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-phenyl-2-propanol H(HFPP). This project will shed light onto the preference and importance of the non-covalent interactions.
