We previously reported the synthesis of a series of trivalent lanthanide complexes bearing the N,N-dimethylaminodiboranate (DMADB) ligand, (H2B)2NMe2. This ligand generally binds to metal centeres as a chelate, in which two hydrogen atoms on each boron bridge to the metal center. All the lanthanides (except promethium) form trivalent Ln(DMADB)3 and Ln(DMADB)3(thf) compounds that sublime in vacuum at low temperatures (often below ~150 oC). We also found that NaDMADB reduces YbIII and EuIII to divalent Ln(DMADB)2(thf)x and Ln(DMADB)2(dme)x complexes at higher temperature, where thf = tetrahydrofuran and dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane. Here we describe the preparation and characterization of divalent DMADB complexes of Sm and Tm. We report crystal structures and spectroscopic characterization of the new compounds Sm(DMADB)2(thf)3, Sm(DMADB)2(dme)2, Tm(DMADB)2(thf)2, and Tm(DMADB)2(thf)3. We also will describe efforts to prepare DMADB complexes of divalent Nd and Dy.
