We have found unusual post-synthetic chemistry to occur between halogen gas and both the organic and inorganic components of hybrid halide perovskites. These apparent gas-solid reactions allow for the capture of radioactive iodine with high volumetric capacities from nuclear power plants, halogen gas separation, and halide substitution in the inorganic lattice. Halogen reactivity can also have a profound impact on the perovskites' photophysical and transport properties. Halogen intercalation in the organic layers of 2D perovskites greatly decreases the electronic confinement of electron-hole pairs generated in the inorganic layers, and spontaneous degassing of halogen gas can electronically dope 3D perovskites, dictating their carrier concentration and electronic transport properties. I will present our understanding of the chemistry of halide perovskites with the halogens, with an emphasis on how it can be used to engender desirable physical and electronic properties in these technologically promising materials.
