The potential use of icosahedral B12H122– derivatives in a broad range of applications makes the investigation of its substitution chemistry an area of interest. Muetterties, et al., synthesized a series of multifunctional dodecaborates; however, their characterization suffered from limited analytical techniques. We present an investigation of the regiochemistry of hydroxylation and iodination of the B12H122– cluster using both synthetic and theoretical methods, illustrating that the substitution of dodecaborates is non-random and reproducible in the formation of B12H12-n(OH)n2– (n = 1-5) and B12H11-nI(OH)n2– (n = 1-3).
