Polymers funcitonalized with anionic or cationic groups are used in a variety of applications - from viscosity modifiers to focculants to membranes for batteries and fuel cells. There are a wide range of synthetic routes to these types of functionalized polymers including direct polymerization of functionalized monomers or through post-polymerization modification routes. Interestingly, polymer backbones, such as polystyrene or polysulfone can be functionalized with sulfonate groups or quaternary ammonium groups to enable comparisons between anionic and cationic polymer analogs with similar structures. This talk will outline important applications of ionic polymers and discuss some key synthetic tools to enable new generations of these materials. Future uses of ionic polymers and advanced membranes will be highlighted.
