Luminescent lanthanide complexes can be used for imaging and sensing applications, due to their large Stokes shifts of sensitized luminescence, high color purity, and long emission lifetimes. Since the excitation occurs through appended ligands, opportunities arise to further derivatize these ligands and introduce an additional property. We are interested in new lanthanide complexes functionalized with known singlet oxygen (<sup>1</sup>O<sub>2</sub>) photosensitizers, such as naphthalimide and oligothiophenes, to study their ability to simultaneously emit light and generate the reactive oxygen species. We will discuss several new complexes, their syntheses, isolation, spectroscopic characterization, preliminary cell imaging, and cytotoxicity studies.
