Massive CO2 emission from global consumption of fossil fuels has become an essential environmental concern associated with global warming, sea-level increase, and other ecological problems. In addition, thermal production of NH3 also consumes a large amount of fossil fuels and is not sustainable. When coupled to the storage of renewable energy (e.g. solar and wind), electrocatalytic reduction represents a highly sustainable approach to convert CO2 and N2 to more reduced, energy rich products. In this presentation, we will present results on exploiting well-defined molecular electrocatalysts and heterogeneous electrocatalysts based on abundant base metals to address the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 and N2. Particularly, we will discuss on how to effectively and reliably evaluate electrochemical data for the reduction of N2, which has been misinterpreted in recent literature.
