The coordination chemistry of highly abundant aluminum warrants investigation by developing complexes to discover new reaction pathways. One such strategy involves utilizing ligand-based proton and electron transfer processes. A series of Al(III) complexes supported by a tridentate ONO bis(enol)amine ligand (1,1′-azanediylbis(3,3-dimethylbutan-2-one), denoted as H3ONO, have been synthesized and characterized structurally. When coordinated to highly lewis acidic aluminum, two previously unaccessible protonation states of H3ONO are accessible. Reaction of AlCl3 with singly deprotonated H2ONO- afforded the pseudooctahedral complex [(H2ONO-)2Al][AlCl4] and reaction of AlCl3 with doubly deprotonated HONO2- afforded the five-coordinate, pseudotrigonal bipyramidal complex (HONO2-)AlCl(THF). The reactivity of these complexes will be discussed and it has been demonstrated that when coordinated to Al, reversible interconversion between the H2ONO- and HONO2- ligand charge states are accessible.
