The decentralization of the health care system creates a strong demand for point-of-care biosensors. Today, a variety of detection concepts, suitable for measuring physiological relevant biomarkers in liquid biopsy, exists. I will present electrochemical and photonic biosensors and put focus on their target specific functionalization. Progress in printing technologies is opening new possibilities for modular fabrication of biosensors. In particular screen printing of electrochemical sensors can be enhanced by inkjet printing of aptamer modified graphene oxide gold-nanoparticle composites (apta-GO-AuNP) specific for different biomolecular targets (Figure 1). The detection of brain natriuretic peptide and thrombin are shown as application examples. The functionalization of an integrated four-channel silicon nitride waveguide based Mach-Zehnder interferometric photonic sensing platform by inkjet printing demonstrates the versatility of this promising technology. I will present surface modification strategies for the detection of C-reactive protein.<br/>Finally, I will introduce a novel photonic imaging concept which has the potential to start unparalleled superresolution microscopy suitable for investigating liquid biopsy. The physical laws of diffraction generally limit the spatial resolution of optical systems, being about 200 nm for light in the visible range. This is the reason why we usually cannot directly observe e.g. single proteins, DNA molecules or the development of internal cellular macromolecular complexes and structures with conventional optical microscopes. One possibility to overcome this limitation is the use of spatially resolved illumination instead of spatially resolved detection. I will present progress towards the realization of the proposed technology.
