Nature has evolved exquisitely selective tools for the oxidation of functionally dense substrates. Chemical methods have been developed which emulate this selectivity, however challenges still remain for particularly difficult transformations. Biocatalysts require the use of less organic solvent, ambient reaction temperatures, low catalyst loadings and can offer improved atom and step economy with higher selectivity than the corresponding chemical transformations. Mild reaction conditions afford the possibility of telescoping reaction steps, thus allowing for rapid increase in molecular complexity in a one-pot chemoenzymatic procedure. Here, we address still intractable challenges in oxidative transformations by developing robust, selective enzymatic methods, and applying those methods to complex molecule synthesis.
