The objective of this study was to develop a material with enhanced adsorption removal capacity of triclosan (TCS) from aqueous solution. To achieve this goal, a Guatemalan bentonite clay (BENT) was modified by an ionic exchange process with cetrimonium chloride (100% of cationic exchange capacity of the clay, the modified bentonite was designated as CETRI-BENT). Both materials were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR) were CETRI-BENT showed two bands at 2924 and 2853 cm<sup>–1</sup> corresponding to vibrations of C-H bonds in the aliphatic chain of the cetrimonium cation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the TCS adsorption on BENT and CETRI-BENT follow the Freundlich isotherm with the 1/n value suggesting cooperative adsorption. Finally, BENT was a decent adsorbent of TCS in aqueous solution with removal degree between 39 and 43% while CETRI-BENT had an enhanced performance with removal degree between 52 and 69% demonstrating that the removal capacity of the clay was improved by the modification with cetrimonium chloride.
