Solutions to humanitarian problems frequently cannot be brought to fruition in the laboratory, and being physically present with the served population is the only way to deliver the intended aid. While the world is full of wonderful people, the farther you travel from home the more challenges and pitfalls you are likely to encounter. In this presentation, the author will share advice and tips from his experiences living, working, and traveling in Latin America. While the focus will be on the Western hemisphere, much of what is presented should be applicable around the world, and hopefully will be of value to anyone who contemplates leaving the lab and getting out into the "real world".
