Capturing stormwater runoff is a valuable resource management practice for addressing the increasing demand for fresh water worldwide, but could cause significant impact on groundwater due to high nutrient content (nitrogen and phosphorus). Removing excess nitrogen with sorption on biosorption activated media (BAM, composed of sand tire crumb, and clay) is one cost-effective basin management practice at the field scale that integrates hydraulic, chemo physical, and microbial processes. BAM is a green sorption medium that is composed of sand, tire crumb, and clay, in which tire crumb is a recycled material in charge of the supply of carbon source and the control of the hydraulic flow pattern. Many studies have proven the cost-effectiveness of BAM in the removal of nitrogen via enhancing the nitrification and denitrification processes in the nitrogen cycle. The efficacy and efficiency of BAM for storm water and groundwater co-treatment at a road side linear ditch was further confirmed. However, dissolved organic nitrogen species (DONs) that are difficult to remove in wastewater treatment plants are often found in nature at a higher concentration than dissolved inorganic nitrogen species (DINs), and potentially provide carbon and nitrogen sources to microorganisms in the nitrogen cycle. Here, we apply ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry to catalogue compositional changes that occur to dissolved organic matter (DOM) and report the effectiveness of BAM for nitrogen removal from stormwater.
