Among the solutions for grid-scale energy storage, Redox Flow Batteries (RFB) are one of the most promising technologies currently in development. One major drawback is the stability and energy density of redox-active electrolytes, and as of yet, there is no single standout option for the RFB. Our goal has been to develop a metal-based redox-active electrolyte using non-innocent ligands that locate the charge center away from the metal center to achieve the desired effect of reducing structural changes at the metal along with delivering multiple equivalents of charge at nearly the same potential. This presentation will describe our efforts to utilize 4,6-dihydroxy-10-phenylphenoxazine as a coordinating ligand in complexes with main group elements such as Aluminum and Gallium.
