The field of organic materials chemistry has greatly impacted display technologies, sensors, non-linear optics, and solar photovoltaics. Chemists are now examining materials that integrate inorganic, non-metallic elements to access hybrid species with unusual optical properties and enhanced stability. Opportunities exist to expand our knowledge of how main-group elements effect conjugation, however, a limiting factor has been the lack of suitable synthetic methods particularly as it relates to molecular compounds of the <i>p</i>-block elements. This presentation will highlight the efforts of our laboratory in the synthesis of a series of Lewis base stabilized-boron heterocycles, from neutral tetracordinate boron complexes to tricoordinate boron cations. These complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and a number of these molecules possess interesting luminescent and/or thermochromic properties. Preliminary work on the synthesis of low-coordinate germanium materials will also be discussed.<br/>
