The low temperature deposition of metal oxides can be critical to the formation of nanocrystalline materials with unusual and useful chemical and physical properties. In this respect, 2-oximinocarboxylates, M(O2C=NOH)R)n, are promising precursors that are designed to decompose to small, volatile organic species and their constituent metal oxides. The chemical and physical properties of iron (II) 2-oximinocarboxylate complexes with R= H, CH3CH2, and C6H5CH2 have been investigated. The iron- complexes were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The magnetic moment values of the complexes showed that the Fe 2-oximinocarboxylates are high-spin paramagnetic compounds. Thermal decomposition of these materials at low temperatures produces high surface area nanocrystalline or amorphous materials. A kinetic study was also performed of the reaction of Iron (III) nitrate hexahydrate with sodium 2-oximinocarboxylate complexes with R= CH3 and CH3CH2.The reaction initially produces a red iron (III) complex that is subsequently converted to the corresponding iron(II) complexes that can be isolated as yellow crystals. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) was used to determine the kinetics and order of the reaction. The activation energy for the redox reactions were determined to 83.4 KJ/mole and 74.4 for both Iron(II) pyruvic acid oxime and iron (II) methylpurivic acid oxime respectively
